What's fixed#
This one is the lookup card's buttons, traced end to end. The panel is the size of the card. It opened at a fixed height for every word, so on any card with a couple of senses the whole row of actions — the dictionary control, translate, explain, copy and pin — sat below a fold the panel gave no sign of having. The window now takes the height the card asks for, and scrolls only past the point where growing would leave empty space. Copy and pin no longer take a click and do nothing. On a card with no sense they were drawn live, accepted the click, and left the pasteboard and your notes untouched. Three of the seven dictionaries enabled on a typical Mac mark no senses at all, so that was the ordinary card for anyone studying from one of them. Both are disabled there now, drawn as disabled, and say why. A word is spoken in the language of the sentence it was read in. The voice was chosen from the word alone, and a word alone is not enough: measured, 14 of 17 common English headwords are misread that way — fine as Italian, hold as Danish, gift as Swedish. Nothing failed and nothing warned you; the word was simply pronounced in Italian. You can agree with the card. A sense the app guessed said "A guess — not confirmed" and the only senses you could tap were the other ones — so a correction could be recorded and an agreement could not. There is now one gesture for it, beside the claim it resolves, and asking for it does not throw away a translation you had already asked for. A guess with no sentence says it is a guess. Where no surrounding text could be captured, the caveat was not drawn at all, so the app's hypothesis read exactly like a sense you had confirmed yourself. The dictionary control can tell its entries apart. One dictionary answers a word with several entries — NOAD answers fine with four — and all of them were labelled with the dictionary's name alone, so picking among them was guessing. Each is named by its own headword now, and the row wraps instead of running off the card. Every icon button has a name and can be hit. They were 13 to 19 points across against the platform's 28, six of them a few points apart, and seven of the eight told VoiceOver nothing but their symbol. Translate is absent where it could say nothing — a sentence already in your own language — and a dictionary that marks no senses offers the way to change it. Also: a public-fallback definition can be copied; a disabled control is visible enough to hover for the reason it is off; and the panel's window is verified on a second Mac now, where a stage measures what clicking the card actually costs.
